complex behavioral sequence that allows it to arave at the source of the odorous plume. Studies on the effect of various neurotransmitters and neuromodulators have shown that odor perception and response periodicity is greatly influenced by several biogenic amines. Further studies on the effect of agonists (a chemical substance capable of combining with a nervous receptor and initiating a reaction), antagonists (a chemical that acts within the body to block its nervous receptor), and related pharmacological agents on the action of these biogenic amines could lead to a new way of "jamming the receiver" and, thus, a new approach to the mating disruption technique. The manipulation of a communication system that is as basic to the insect's survival as the sex pheromones requires an indepth knowledge of the whole communication system, from whole-body behavior to the molecular level Keeping Ahead of the Wolf: Pest Resistance to Agricultural Pesticides

Integrated Pest Management Farmer Field School for Sustainable Agriculture

The study was conducted among the two farmer groups in Bhaktapur and Kavre districts of Nepal. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of IPM FFS on creating awareness and disseminating the knowledge on sustainable pest management to the farmers and to assess the relationships between enhanced IPM knowledge and adoption of IPM strategies by the farmers. The study has be...

Indirect Effects of Pesticides on Natural Enemies

Pesticides including insecticides and miticides are primarily used to regulate arthropod (insect and mite) pest populations in agricultural and horticultural crop production systems. However, continual reliance on pesticides may eventually result in a number of potential ecological problems including resistance, secondary pest outbreaks, and/or target pest resurgence [1,2]. Therefore, implement...

Biological Limits on Agricultural Intensification: An Example from Resistance Management

Agricultural intensification could reduce pressures on natural habitats, but biological constraints may mitigate the long-term benefits of improved agricultural technologies. We consider one such constraint: that imposed by resistance to pesticides. The application of pesticides places selective evolutionary pressure on pest populations. Those organisms that survive show resistance. Resistance ...

Measuring IPM Impacts in California and Arizona

Integrated pest management (IPM) is a method of reducing economic, human health, and environmental risks from pests and pest management strategies. There are questions about the long-term success of IPM programs in relation to continued use of pesticides in agriculture. Total pounds of pesticides applied is a mis-measure of the impact of IPM in agriculture. A more complete measurement of the lo...

Recent trends of modern bacterial insecticides for pest control practice in integrated crop management system

Food security and safety are the major concern in ever expanding human population on the planet earth. Each and every year insect pests cause a serious damage in agricultural field that cost billions of dollars annually to farmers. The loss in term of productivity and high cost of chemical pesticides enhance the production cost. Irrespective use of chemical pesticides (such as Benzene hexachlor...
